WELCOME ABOARD COACH NAU!
The Evansville Enforcers are proud to welcome Reitz Hall of Famer Richard "Porky" Nau as the 2012 Head Coach!

The Evansville Enforcers have made a lot changes in the off-season in preparation for a successful 2012 campaign. Possibly the biggest change is the addition of a new coach, Richard “Porky” Nau. Coach Nau has a long resume of coaching experience but is new to the Enforcers. He brings a grass roots, common sense approach to teaching, learning, and playing the game of football. The players are 100% on board with Coach Nau’s plans for the upcoming season.
Before going any further, let’s get to the question that is on everyone’s mind. Just where did he get that nickname, “Porky.” No, it did not stem from his favorite food or his less than svelte physique. Much like Orlando “Tubby” Smith, who got his nickname long ago from taking lengthy baths, Richard Nau was dubbed “Porky” in his youth. A classmate at Centennial noticed his striking resemblance to a Lassie Show character named Porky and the name has stuck with him ever since.
Coach Nau is a home grown treasure, having grown up on Evansville’s West Side. He attended Centennial School before going on to Reitz High School where he excelled in football as a lineman under legendary Coach Herman Byers. (O. k., so he’s old, but we’d all do well to have his energy level at any age.) Coach Nau went on to play college football at Western Kentucky but his approach to football is right out of the Coach Byers school.
Coach Nau was a member of Reitz’s 1961 team that was undefeated, untied, and un-scored-upon. That level of excellence was not achieved by taking preparation lightly and Coach Nau has not taken a casual approach to getting the Enforcers ready for this season either. His philosophy is simple; you don’t go on to the next thing until you’ve done the first thing right. You don’t need to do a lot of different things; you just need to do a few things exceptionally well. This approach is straight from Coach Byers and he was reasonably successful with it. That kind of preparation will prevent sloppy play when a game is on the line.
Now that tryouts are closed and the roster is set, Coach Nau is evaluating talent at each position. Returners are not handed a starting position. Coach Nau is looking to put the best team on the field. His initial goal is to have 22 starters, with depth in place at all positions. In extreme cases, some players will need to play both ways, but Coach Nau is confident that we have enough depth to spread the playing time and keep fresh legs on the field at all times.
Will the Enforcers be a defensive or an offensive oriented team? That has yet to be determined. Coach Nau is putting the pieces of the puzzle together to get the maximum performance out of each phase of the game. One thing is for sure, with his expertise in line play, developing the Big Uglies will be an area of emphasis this year. Quality line play creates so many opportunities for the little people to make big things happen. With Coach Nau at the helm, this year’s Evansville Enforcers Team expects big things to happen.
